Aim
To establish Victoria’s first H&N cancer support group using a sustainable peer-led model.
Support group establishment
Western and Central Melbourne Integrated Cancer Service [1] (WCMICS) identified the absence of a support group for Victorians affected by Head and Neck (H&N) cancer.
A series of educational community events held by WCMICS in 2019 enabled socialisation of the concept, a network of people affected by H&N cancer and identification of suitable facilitators. It also explored the requirements and challenges of scaling up to a self-sustaining peer-led support group.
Overwhelming positive feedback indicated that the opportunity to share and hear experiences from Victorians affected by H&N cancer was incredibly beneficial. “I am not abnormal – there are others out there like me.” - this patient quote highlighted the importance of access to peer support, the opportunity to share their experiences, and the need for a Victorian H&N cancer support group.
Two peer-facilitators were identified and participated in Cancer Council Victoria’s leader training to achieve cancer support group recognition. A peer-led model ensures it is fit-for-purpose, enables empowerment and ownership of the support group’s direction.
Sustainability
The first-ever Victorian H&N Cancer Education & Support Group launched in November 2019. The group has continued to meet bi-monthly despite the challenges of COVID-19 restrictions. During 2020, the group quickly adjusted and successfully transitioned to online meetings. It now operates as a hybrid model of hosting a face-to-face meeting and an option for members to join concurrently via Zoom.
Collaborations with national and patient-advocacy organisations such as Cancer Council Victoria and Head & Neck Cancer Australia and a leading cancer health service contributed to the success, reach and sustainability of this peer-led support group.
