The OCPs aim to improve patient outcomes by promoting evidence-based high-quality cancer care. These resources support increased collaboration, more effective clinical care and improved healthcare provider–patient communication, with the ultimate goal to improve the patient experience and ensure all people diagnosed with cancer receive the best care, irrespective of where they live or receive cancer treatment.

The OCPs are a framework for the delivery of consistent, safe, high-quality, and evidence-based care for people with cancer. They are underpinned by nationally agreed principles of care and best practice for every step of the cancer experience from prevention and early detection through to recovery or end-of-life care. The OCPs include timeframes to help patients understand optimal timeframes for their care, and to help health services plan care delivery in accordance with expert-informed and evidence-based time parameters. Recently, 15 OCPs, quick reference guides and consumer guides were refreshed, to ensure they remain clinically relevant and up to date with current evidence and best practice.

The OCPs provide a national standard for high-quality cancer care. Knowing best care options and the questions to ask supports empowered patients participating in their care planning and better-informed healthcare providers. Adherence to the OCPs supports improved patient outcomes and experiences.

Promoting consistent delivery of quality cancer care ensures everyone affected by cancer can achieve best outcomes. The recently updated, nationally endorsed, OCP resources provide an exciting opportunity to continue to implement and promote best cancer care for all Australians affected by cancer.
