DAISI (Doctors Assisting In South Pacific Islands) has been in operation since 2016. It is a small non government funded Australian charity with the aim of improving health service delivery in the South Pacific, with a particular emphasis on helping its closest and neighbours the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Kiribati. It predominantly consists of specialist surgeons, physicians and anaesthetists.  Improving cancer care has been a key goal for  DAISI with an emphasis in the early years on teaching good oncological surgical technique.  Developing the necessary supportive histopathology, radiology and medical oncology services to manage cancer in a multimodal and multi-disciplinary manner has been its secondary goal, and our next major challenge, with only modest achievements made so fare. With COVID travel bans DAISI has realised the potential for collaboration and teaching via ZOOM sessions, and this year has conducted monthly teaching sessions on topics to do with general surgery and gynaecological cancer conditions and their treatment with involvement of medical oncology (Prof Desmond Yip) and anatomical pathology (Dr Debra Smith) at these sessions. Moving forward, we hope to turn these ZOOM session more into multi-disciplinary team meetings, where real cases are discussed in real time.  But we still have a long way to go with so much vital equipment and support still lacking.
